A day labourer is a person who earns his living by performing hard physical work on a daily wage basis. Usually, a day labourer is an unskilled or semi-skilled manual worker who relies entirely on his daily earnings to support his family. In a developing country like Bangladesh, day labourers play a crucial role in building the nation's infrastructure, yet their lives remain full of hardship and uncertainty.
Every morning, hundreds of poor workers gather at local labor markets holding their basic tools, such as spades, baskets, and ropes. They wait anxiously for contractors or employers to hire them for the day. If a day labourer gets hired, he works relentlessly under the burning sun or during continuous rain. They perform heavy and exhausting duties such as digging soil, carrying construction materials like bricks and concrete, harvesting crops in farmland, and loading or unloading cargo at ports and markets.
In return for an entire day of grueling labor, a day labourer receives a very meager wage. This small amount is barely sufficient to buy food and basic necessaries for his family. On days when he finds no work, his family has to suffer from starvation. Despite being the real creators of our roads, bridges, and high-rise buildings, day labourers usually live in overcrowded and unhygienic slums. They are often deprived of adequate healthcare, proper sanitation, and education for their children. দিনমজুর হলেন এমন একজন শ্রমজীবী মানুষ যিনি দৈনিক মজুরির ভিত্তিতে কঠোর শারীরিক পরিশ্রম করে জীবিকা নির্বাহ করেন। সাধারণত একজন দিনমজুর অদক্ষ বা আংশিক দক্ষ শারীরিক শ্রমিক হন, যিনি পরিবারকে বাঁচিয়ে রাখতে সম্পূর্ণভাবে তাঁর প্রতিদিনের আয়ের ওপর নির্ভর করেন। বাংলাদেশের মতো উন্নয়নশীল দেশে দেশের অবকাঠামো নির্মাণে দিনমজুরদের ভূমিকা অত্যন্ত গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হলেও তাঁদের জীবন সর্বদা কষ্ট ও অনিশ্চয়তায় ভরা থাকে।
প্রতিদিন ভোরে শত শত দরিদ্র শ্রমিক কোদাল, ঝুড়ি ও দড়ি হাতে স্থানীয় শ্রমের বাজারে জড়ো হন। ঠিকাদার বা মালিকরা তাঁদের কাজের জন্য ডাকবে—এই আশায় তাঁরা উৎকণ্ঠায় অপেক্ষা করেন। কাজ পেলে একজন দিনমজুর প্রচণ্ড রোদ কিংবা টানা বৃষ্টির মধ্যেও অবিরাম পরিশ্রম করেন। তাঁরা মাটি কাটা, নির্মাণস্থলে ইট ও সিমেন্ট বহন করা, খেতের ফসল কাটা এবং বাজারে বা পোর্টে পণ্য ওঠানো-নামানোর মতো ভারী ও কষ্টসাধ্য কাজ সম্পাদন করেন।
সারাদিন অত্যন্ত পরিশ্রম করার পর একজন দিনমজুর যে সামান্য অর্থ মজুরি পান, তা দিয়ে পরিবারের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় খাবার জোগাড় করাও কঠিন হয়ে পড়ে। আর যেদিন কাজ জোটে না, সেদিন তাঁর পুরো পরিবারকে অনাহারে দিন কাটাতে হয়। আমাদের রাস্তাঘাট, সেতু ও বহুতল ভবনের প্রকৃত কারিগর হওয়া সত্ত্বেও দিনমজুররা সাধারণত নোংরা ও অস্বাস্থ্যকর বস্তিতে বসবাস করেন। তাঁরা উন্নত চিকিৎসা, সঠিক স্যানিটেশন এবং সন্তানদের শিক্ষার সুযোগ থেকে বঞ্চিত থাকেন। এই কঠোর পরিশ্রমী মানুষদের একটি সম্মানজনক জীবন নিশ্চিত করার জন্য সরকার ও সমাজের উচিত তাঁদের ন্যায্য মজুরি, কর্মসংস্থান ও স্বাস্থ্যসেবা সুনিশ্চিত করা।
